View Food MenuWhy are we named The Clement Attlee? Clement Attlee is undoubtedly the most significant and consequential figure to have come out of Limehouse in the twentieth century. Frequently named among Britain’s greatest Prime Ministers (1945–1951), he is celebrated for founding the post-war welfare state and creating the NHS, as well as shaping the Special Relationship with the United States and helping establish NATO.
Attlee became Mayor of Stepney in 1919, and was elected as Member of Parliament for Limehouse in 1922 – serving for twenty-eight years until 1950. Although not born locally, in 1906 Attlee became a volunteer at Haileybury House, a club for working-class boys in Stepney, later serving as the club’s manager. A towering figure in British history, Attlee was inspired and shaped by Limehouse and Stepney. We are proud to be named in his honour.
Unusually for a central London pub we are 100% independent being owned by ourselves, two old school friends, without any links to a major pub company or brewery. This independence means our sole focus is on your enjoyment and satisfaction. Every product we showcase is chosen for its exceptional quality alone.
We established The Craft Beer Co., our small collection of pubs, in 2011 and our passion for the great British pub and real hospitality is stronger today than ever. The Clement Attlee, of which we are incredibly proud, is a tribute to a truly great figure in British -and Limehouse- history. Blood, sweat and tears have gone into making this pub for you, we hope you enjoy it.
Thank you for your support, we are very grateful and never take it for granted.
